Step up!
"A man ought to vote with the whole of himself, as he worships or gets married. A man ought to vote with his head and heart, his soul and stomach, his eye for faces and his ear for music." G. K. Chesterton (1874-1936)
Gilbert Keith Chesterton lived a long time ago, but he had a point about voting - a man (or a woman) should vote with passion, because how you vote does make a difference. But what if you couldn't vote and everybody else could?
- 1872 - USA:
- The 15th Amendment is ratified. Citizens of any race can vote - as long as they are men! But there's another catch - Native American men are not citizens!
- 1920 - USA:
- 19th Amendment is ratified. Women over 21 can vote - and about time! But if you're a Native American woman you're still out of luck!
- 1924 - USA:
- Native Americans become US citizens - duh! Finally they can vote. It sure took long enough!
- 1972 - USA:
- 26th Amendment is ratified. The voting age changes from 21 to 18. So now you can drive yourself to the polls.
- Right Now - USA:
- 80 percent of 80-year-olds vote but only 20 percent of 20-year-olds do. Let's change that!
